Dr Andrew Rochford shares his thoughts on "Tip 3" of the DrinkWise 5 Point Plan for Parents which is to listen and engage. If you have a partner begin by talking to them and finding out their views on alcohol. Establishing some common ground with each other will help you to be consistent with your message- even if your opinions are slightly different. Engage with your kids as well and remember to take into account their thoughts. Try to involve yourself in their lives as much as possible. Get to know their friends and their friends' parents. This will help you to understand the views and position other parents have, and even if they are not the same as yours, by communicating your views they are more likely to respect them and uphold them when your kids are around.
The vast majority of parents don't believe that it is acceptable for kids to drink before they are 18 so don't worry, you're not alone!! Communication is the key- talk to your kids, talk to the parents of their friends and most importantly talk to your partner. In most States in Australia it is against the law to serve a drink to anyone under the age of 18 in your home unless their parents or guardians have given their permission.
