This Tom Paxton song may be easy to sing but I found it hard because I have never known what it feels like to be poverty stricken. It reminds me of the abject despair in John Steinbecks Grapes of Wrath. Ive never been jobless or without a roof over my head. The nearest I got was sleeping rough on a station platform one night when hitch-hiking ran out of daylight. It was the most scared Ive been. I slept fitfully, imagining that I was going to wake up dead with my wallet gone.duh?
Next morning, I stumbled into the station café, ordered a cup of tea and promptly fell asleep over it. When I woke up, nearly all the other customers were asleep. It was funny in a strange way.
Normally, my son, Matt sings the lead but Im indulging myself here. Sound is a bit rough and sorry about the twangs at the end. I think I was getting too enthusiastic with the finishing post in sight! Oh and Mr. Paxton sings it faster but hell, hes had longer to learn it!
Oh, a word of advice. Never try hitch-hiking up the middle of England on a Sunday afternoon.
Just a quick thankyou to ottawarocket for the red-cross parcels which are beginning to arrive. Someone ignored my request for you not to use Fedex but its alright as I now have a prefab, biodegradable home big enough to sub-let. Even got a shower unit.when it rains. You are all welcome to stay if you are in the area.
the song is on Toms Rambling Boy album and if you want the lyrics just ask.

Geoff

Oh and a 'plug' for the band.
