This vocal group was formed in the USA around Margie Hendrix, and was previously known as the Cookies, whose R&B backing voices appeared on numerous 50s sessions and inspired the new group's inception. Founded to provide responsive vocals for singer Ray Charles, this female trio provided the launching pad for several careers. Merry Clayton, Mable John, Minnie Riperton, Clydie King and Estella Yarbrough were all members at some point, although Hendrix provided a long-serving constant. The Raelettes did have several minor hits via Charles's Tangerine label, but their frequently changing personnel denied them a more constructive recording career. Hendrix, however, who had had early solo exposure on the Lamp label, also recorded on her own in the 60s, for Tangerine, Mercury and Sound Stage 7. ~http://www.music.us/biography/artist/...
