Story of the fastest supercomputer in Europe - Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) powered by IBM System x iDataPlex

The solution: The solution is an IBM Intelligent ClusterTM with IBM System x® iDataPlex® Direct Water Cooled dx360 M4 servers featuring the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 2600 family.

The benefits: The IBM solution saves $1.2 million annually in energy costs and delivers 50 times more computing power than the previous solution, while only using three times more electricity.

The fastest supercomputer in Europe is the SuperMUC, an IBM iDataplex system installed at the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum in Germany. According to the list announced today at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, the system is the fourth fastest in the world.
The figures are outlined in a release from IBM:
"The new LRZ "SuperMUC" system was built with IBM System x iDataPlex Direct Water Cooled dx360 M4 servers with more than 150,000 cores to provide a peak performance of up to three petaflops, which is equivalent to the work of more than 110,000 personal computers.
