Binaural Beats & Brain Wave Activity


Brainwaves can be categorized by frequency and indirectly by their function. They're measured using an EEG machine and can be influenced by listening to binaural beats. When we hear two different frequencies, one in each ear, we hear an audio artifact, a binaural beat.

For example if you hear a 300Hz tone in your left ear and a 310Hz tone in your right, you'll "hear" a 10Hz binaural beat (310-300=10). 10Hz falls with the alpha brainwave range so hearing a 10Hz binaural beat increases alpha brainwave activity.

Beta brainwaves (13-40 Hz) are associated with active thinking and concentration.

Alpha brainwaves (7-13 Hz) are associated with relaxation and drowsiness.

Theta brainwaves (4-7 Hz) are associated with dreams, meditation, & REM sleep.

Delta brainwaves are associated with deep sleep.
