Crowds of protesters defied social distancing rules and gathered at the German-Polish border crossing in Zgorzelec town on Friday, demanding its reopening for thousands of Polish commuters working in Germany. The border has been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The protesters were seen shaking the fence at the bridge dividing Polish Zgorzelec and German Goerlitz.

A large group of Goerlitz residents gathered at the opposite side of the fence to express solidarity with their Polish neighbours.

Around 125,000 Polish citizens are travelling daily to Germany for work, being Europe's largest group of cross-border workers, according to the 2018 Eurostat report.
