The Truth About Female Athlete Triad Syndrome

Dr. Kelly Austin stops by UW Radio to discuss the dangers of Female Athlete Triad Syndrome. If a woman stops menstruating, she is infertile and cannot become pregnant because of low estrogen levels. This disorder does have long term risks on the body. The longer you go without a period, the more harm you are doing to your body.

Bone loss can occur because of the low estrogen. Estrogen is required to break down bone but bones are a living structure that constantly replenish so when there is low estrogen, you can get rid of the weaker bone. This can also cause your body to not produce progesterone and testosterone, leading to osteoporosis. Stress fractures are also common as a result of this.

Risk factors for Female Athlete Triad Syndrome are people who over train or over exercise, vegetarians, people who limit foods they eat, and people who participate in high intensity sports. It's not just too much cardio, it can be weight training as well. The stress from these activities can break down the gut lining, causing digestive issues.
