Hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianism
Hello my devoted disciples! I'm not feeling so well, I'm afraid there's something wrong with my asseocarnisanguineoviscericartilaginonervomedullary! I've been investigating my situation on Web MD, and there are numerous possibilities. I could have pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, or maybe I need an emergency hepaticocholangiocholecystenterostomy. I just hope it's not pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis! I think I need to ask the doctor to investigate...
So I went to the doctor, he ran a few tests, then finally gave me my diagnosis. Wanna know what he told me? I have hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianism. Don't worry, it's not fatal! Hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianism is just the love or use of long words! Lucky for you, I don't just love long words, I love explaining them to you. So let's take a look at the origin of this one.
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianism is a lot of different words all rolled into one. In the late 14th century, "hippo" was used to refer to a huge Biblical beast. (Which eventually evolved into "hippopotamus," the name of the third largest land mammal in the world.) "Monstro" has Latin origins, and means "strange, unnatural, and enormous."
"Sesquipedalian" comes from the Latin phrase "sesquipedalia verba" found in Horace's "Ars Poetica," which means "words a foot-and-a-half long." "-ism" is a suffix that turns a word into a noun describing a particular condition. So when you put it all together, it makes sense that hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianism means the condition of using strange, enormous words.
