Speaker - Lyzi Diamond @lyzidiamond Lyzi is the education lead at MapBox and the co-manager of MapTime.
MapTime is a community which uses opensource tools to teach geospatial techniques to beginner mappers. Lyzi talks through the foundations of MapTime from a meetup of friends through to a global community with other 60 groups across all continents. Each group or “chapter” has a different format and way of teaching. Some are presented as tutorials whereas as others are mapathons. However, they are all aimed at informing beginner mappers who are interested to learn more in an inclusive and accessible community. In this way, it is aimed at encouraging new mappers who might otherwise not contribute as much due to the overwhelming capabilities of OpenStreetMap.
Although based on educating new mappers, MapTime chapters responded on mass to the Nepal earthquake, independently organising HOT events. Lyzi sees many similarities between HOT and MapTime in their ideals for inclusive and accessible community where people can learn and contribute to mapping.
