This is my latest project from the "Electronic Music and MIDI" class I am taking at Diablo Valley College, taught by Mark Steidel. (He's an awesome teacher, by the way, and a great piano player.) Our fourth assignment was to create a song using Steinberg Cubase 5 that was at least two minutes long. We had to use VSTi (software) instruments and not any instruments on the Korg Triton (hardware). There had to be at least four different parts. There were other requirements too, but I think I've listed the most relevant ones.

In this project, I used (from top to bottom):
*Melody:
-Above The Rim (HALionOne)
*Monk (doctor) backup (Monk vs. 'munk - get it?):
-Delay Lama "Tinley"
*Piano:
-Acoustic Piano (HALionOne)
*Harmony:
-Brass Sect[ion] (HALionOne)
*Bass:
-NuMetal Bass (HALionOne)
*Drums:
-Pop Kit (Groove Agent ONE)

The inspiration for this remix of a 1950s classic came from the Delay Lama's ability to sing different vowels based on how you move the pitch bend wheel on the keyboard. Up was "Ee", neutral (middle) was "Ah", and down was "Oo". Using track automation, I could control when those different vowels were sounded. Other track automations used for all parts were mainly volume changes and stereo pan (left-center-right) changes, all automated.
I played every single part you hear in this song, including piano, horns, bass, and drums. (In real life, I only know how to play piano, and I took drum lessons for a couple of years.) The visual portion of this video was made with CamStudio, and as it recorded, you can see that I was fiddling around with Cubase's interface to give you the best possible impression of what it looked like as it performed. Unfortunately, while CamStudio captured the original resolution (somewhat large), WMM degraded the image quality slightly. The audio portion of this video was from a .WAV file output directly from Cubase (Audio Mixdown). In post-production, I used Windows Movie Maker to put the two together, and it took about 15 minutes to write the video file on my computer. It takes about 10 seconds for YouTube to ingest this video. It takes even less time for the video to be playable on your computer. Anyway, if you've read this entire thing, congratulations! Enjoy the song. When it was showed in class, a lot of students smiled; I think mine was the most entertaining.

Credits: "Witch Doctor" was written by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958. (It reached #1 on the "Billboard" Pop Singles Chart.) He sings the original version as his character "David Seville". The "doctor" (the sped-up high voice in the original) was his own voice sped up. However, it is not a "chipmunk", as Alvin and the Chipmunks had not been invented yet. There are a number of other covers of this song, but perhaps the most well-known one is the version by the Danish band Cartoons. In 1998, their debut album "Toonage" included this song, and it was #2 in the United Kingdom. This version was also featured in DDRMAX Dance Dance Revolution 6thMix.

Lyrics for the original version:
(C Major)
I told the Witch Doctor I was in love with you
I told the Witch Doctor I was in love with you
And the Witch Doctor he told me what to do
He said that

CHORUS: (first time: doctor only)
Ooo eee oo ah ah
Ting tang walla walla bing bang
Ooo eee oo ah ah
Ting tang walla walla bang bang
(repeat once)

(key up to C# Major)
I told the Witch Doctor you didn't love me true
I told the Witch Doctor you didn't love me nice
And then the Witch Doctor he gave me this advice
He said that

(CHORUS, David and Doctor)

BRIDGE:
You can keep your love from me just like you were a miser
And I'll admit I wasn't very smart
So I went out and found myself a guy that's so much wiser
And he taught me the way to win your heart

(key up to D Major)
My friend the Witch Doctor he taught me what to say
My friend the Witch Doctor he taught me what to do
I know that you'd been by when I say this to you

(CHORUS, David only first time, add Doctor second time)

(BRIDGE)
(repeat third verse)
(CHORUS, David only first time, add Doctor second and third times, fade out)
