"Vigil" by Matt Dombrowski and Scott F. Hall, 2011, video with stereo sound, 3 minutes 43 seconds duration
"Vigil", a collaboration in moving image and sound by Matt Dombrowski and Scott F. Hall, at first appears frozen: a tromp l'oeil moment paired with the pulsing beats of an onomatopoetic heart. Soon, the volume grows and movement emerges visibly as subtle flashes of light shimmer within a rectangular window, itself framed by a larger window on the world. Next, the solitary figure in this superrealist ground—a single flower—begins to arch in descent. As the audio ebbs and light fades to darkness, the bloom lies low.
Excerpt from a review
..."Vigil" is a memento mori but upsets the grammar of viewing and death normative in such mementos by casting the reluctant viewer as a witness of the decay that intervenes between the two... [Eleni Manolaraki. Ph.D., Associate Professor of Classics, University of South Florida]
