Mick Ebeling is an executive producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. You may recognize him from his TED Talk for the EyeWriter (http://bit.ly/eFHK1b) a collaborative DIY project that "unlocked" TEMPT One, a well-known L.A. graffiti artist who was rendered unable to move, breathe or speak after being diagnosed with ALS, a degenerative nerve disease.

EyeWriter is an open-source project that helps people create art using only their eyes. It is not for sale-- all the instructions are all online. It's possible to build one's own device for less than $100.

Mick is also producing "Getting Up: The TEMPT One Story," a documentary of Tempt One's life as an artist still creating even while his disease progresses. (http://gettingup-thedoc.com/)

How does a man with no experience in ocular technology take on a project like the Eye Writer? Well, by the same principle behind Mick's new collaborate site, Not Impossible labs (http://notimpossiblelabs.com/) where makers, engineers, artists, thinkers, and more can collaborate on projects to create low-cost, DIY open-source solutions for real people with real needs. For instance, as TEMPT One's disease progresses, his needs are changing-- this is why Mick is working on a new project, the BrainWriter.

Is open-source and DIY a possible future for healthcare needs? Of course, it's not possible to make drugs and medications through crowd-sourcing, but it is wholly possible to make medical technology in a way that's more accessible and affordable.

Mick Ebeling sits down with Nerd Alert Host and Executive Producer, Kim Horcher (http://www.youtube.com/user/NerdAlert) to discuss his work creating the Eye Writer, The Brain Writer, and Not Impossible Labs.
