Governor Christie: I was in a restaurant the other night picking up a pizza. And these four people came up to me. Three of them said Governor, we love you, we love what you're doing. I shook their hand and said thank you. Then this fourth woman said hi Governor. I can't say I love you. And I said why not? She said I like you but I don't love you. I said OK why not? And she said because I'm a teacher. And I said OK, well then, why do you like me and not love me? She goes, because I work hard. And I said I know you work hard. She said I don't think you think I work hard. I said you're wrong. I said who told you I think you don't work hard? She said, well, stuff I've read, stuff I heard at my meetings. I said listen, are you a good teacher? She said I am. I said do you work hard? She said I do. I said well then, I honor you. And I said I think you should be paid more when you're excellent and your children achieve in your classroom like everybody else in America who does well should be paid better for achieving.
But I told her I really believe that your profession deserves a union as good as you are. And you don't have one. So we need to reform the tenure system, because nobody, nobody in this state should be guaranteed a job after three years and one day on the job without regard to how they do a job. If you do a great job we want you to stay in teaching as long as you want but if you're ineffective in front of the classroom we need to get you away from in front of that classroom and onto something else.
