Kisaasi Ndudu is home to one of the least known love stories. It is in this village that Mr and Mrs Katabazi Michael Messiah call home.
The young couple broke new ground in October when they decided to legalize their relationship in an introduction ceremony at Barbara’s parents.
They officially got married on Saturday, in a wedding that surprised many. This is because the gorgeous Michael is HIV negative while Barbara is HIV positive. They are living in a discordant relationship.
HIV discordance is where one of two sexual partners is HIV positive while the other is HIV negative. Katabazi asserts that it was not a smooth journey for him when it came to unveiling the kind of woman to his family that he had chosen to spend the rest of his life with. Predictably, his parents objected to the relationship.
Barbara recalls these moments with so much pain. Her in-laws boycotted both the introduction ceremony and the wedding.
The couple plans to have their first child in 2017. They have undergone massive counseling to prepare them for the bumpy road ahead and have settled for condom use, for now.
Barbara Kemigisa cannot tell how she acquired the virus, although she remembers being defiled by her uncle from the age of six. The uncle convinced her with sweets, ordering her to keep silent of the affair.
She later realized she was both pregnant and HIV positive in 2008. She gave birth to a baby girl. Unfortunately, the six year old girl is also HIV positive.
Barbara now sees light at the end of the tunnel in her found life.
