Brief history of disco music and dance presented in 20 minutes. What was the first disco song (around 1972) and why did it come to flames in Chicago’s Disco Demolition Night? We examine how established elements of Jazz, Funk, Latin & Soul cultures came together to worship “four-on-the-floor” & “the hustle.” Ritualistic dance fads will be surveyed as we travel sonically through known episodes of ecstatic dance music in history culminating in NYC nightclubs of the early 70s and the mainstream disco explosion years later which became a $4 billion dollar industry that crashed in 1979.

These Powerpoint slides were presented November 2016 at High Noon Saloon for Madison Nerd Nite. Main sources used are: Albert Goldman (1978), Anthony Haden-Guest (1997),
Peter Shapiro (2005), Alice Echols (2010), Kevin Brook (2016).
