There are several key characteristics that, when combined, produce an ideal drug and human smuggling corridor. Our wilderness, national wildlife refuges, monuments and other federal lands along the Arizona border are becoming havens for criminal activity due to drug and human smuggling cartels that now "own" these areas. Law enforcement is minimal due to environmental laws and regulations. Despite the dangerous situation in Arizona that has resulted from wilderness designation along the border, Senator Bingaman continues to support S.1689. This legislation would introduce wilderness legislation in close proximity to the southern border in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and would add to the existing conditions resulting in a perfect smuggling corridor.
