Welcome to Planet Patrol, brought to you by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. This month we're focusing on the kitchen, and things you can do there to help the planet.

There are few simple things in the kitchen tat we all need to think about, and how we impact the environment. The first on is conservation, both energy and water conservation. For energy conservation, an easy thing you can do is unplug those small appliances when you're not using them. Things like the toaster, blender and coffee maker use electricity anytime they are plugged in. Imagine if every house has 3 or 4 small appliances and they are all left plugged in, the amount of wasted energy adds up quickly.

For water conservation, there are other things you can do like running the dishwasher only when it's full, fixing drippy faucets or even turning the faucet off while you lather up with soap to wash your hands.

Another big consideration in the kitchen is where does the food we eat come from? This is also known as food miles. Food miles are how far food travels to get from where it's grown to your table. For example, if you buy fruit or vegetables or even flowers at a local farmer's market, they were grown on a nearby farm. These items have a lot less food miles than the same thing you might buy at a grocery store that was grown in Canada, Florida, Mexico or even South America.

Some other things you can do in the kitchen involve packaging and what you buy at the store. Single serving packages at the store use a lot of extra packaging materials. Some of which can be recycled but the rest ends up in the landfill. Use plastic containers or drink bottles to make your own servings. Plus, it usually saves your parents money.

Make your Eco-Story a good one by doing some of the things we've talked about today. Find out more about saving energy in your family room, and check out the virtual tour of the Mobile Education Exhibit at http://www.iowadnr.gov/Environment/La....
