How do we decide between the familiar and the unknown? David Badre, Michael Frank, and colleagues find that the pattern of neural activity in rostrolateral prefrontal cortex can distinguish between individuals who rely on relative uncertainty for their exploratory decisions and those who do not, suggesting that this brain region plays a critical role in supporting uncertainty-driven exploration.
