Loaves and Fishes is a non-profit in Nanaimo that has helped the hungry get back on their feet for sixteen years The work continues, but the biggest challenge now is space. There's not enough room to store and distribute the tons of food given out each year. It's in part the price of success. The agency has turned food retailers into partners - who now allow volunteers to pick up food that's close to it's best before date. Food that used to be thrown out. Better nutrition, bigger hampers and more work for volunteers. And a desperate need for more space. The organization is trying to raise $550,000 to purchase a warehouse near its current headquarters. So far, the food bank has raised $40,000 in community donations and is currently seeking financial assistance from the City of Nanaimo.
