http://www.brickbuilt.com A step is not needed but it adds intensity. This is a excellent body stabilizer and balance promoter.
Step back slowly, keeping upper body upright and front knee inline and straight. Lower back knee a few inches from floor and raise back up. You can start off resting a broom on your trapezius( lower back of neck) until you're stable and strong enough for weights.
Keeping lower abs pulled in will help support the back and help with stability/balance when you're stepping backwards.
