The scanning electron microscope (or SEM) is a microscope that provides a 3D photograph at high magnification levels. It provides up to 300 thousand times magnification in order to obtain high-resolution images of desired samples. In many fields of study, like infectious disease or cell biology, it is desirable to see the fine features of a cell or of a particle surface as this often can provide researchers with clues to answer a current question or new avenues of study or discovery.
