Decanters serve two main purposes. Besides allowing wine to breath, they're also particularly useful when it comes to removing sediment from older wines. Most wines, especially reds, will benefit from a quick run through a decanter fifteen minutes or so before you plan to serve them. This will help to soften the wine and shake off any unpleasant aromas that may have developed in the bottle.
