As congress debates a 2012 Farm & Food Bill, some Minnesota farmers and environmental stewards want it to include provisions for natural conservation. They're looking to get that 9% of the bill previously reserved for conservation expanded and funded. Northfield farmer Dave Legvold has experiemented with no-till fields for years, which keeps crop residue in the topsoil and prevents excessive erosion. New proposals in the Farm Bill for erosion control and stricter water quality standards could get more farmers on board to keep top soil in Minnesota fields and and out of rivers.
