The foreign policy advisor to the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says Bashar al-Assad is Syria’s lawful president and that Iran considers him as its redline.
Ali Akbar Velayati said only Syrian people, who elected Assad, are entitled to decide the future of their country. Velayati stressed that no foreign country can interfere in the process. The official added that Iran’s presence in the Geneva talks doesn't imply making a deal with other countries over Syria. Velayati further noted that Iran will never stop backing the lawful government in Syria and the Syrian people. He stated that no foreign country will be allowed to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs.
