The Russians manage to mobilize much quicker than expected and advance several miles into Germany, but are halted and nearly decimated at the Battle of Tannenberg in late August 1914. Austria-Hungary invades Serbia, and although Belgrade is bombarded, the Serbian army drives the Austrian forces out of their country. Italy joins the war, and its battlefields are like no other seen in the war. The Ottoman Empire joins, its army being built up by belief in Islam and German tactics. New weapons of war and introduced. Chemical warfare is born. Aerial warfare become a must for both sides.
