Come on. I'm biased toward distance records myself but... Bolt's records are damn good too. The closest anyone has ever come to Bolt is 9.69, which is 1.1% off his record. El G ran 7:23, which is 0.7% away from Komen's. That is at least one objective sense in which you could say Bolt's record is better...and it's a little illogical to compare a distance record to a sprint one and say one is more impressive just cause. However, I'm sorta hypocrite...Komen's record is 10x more badass than Bolts

I think it is. Guys like Bekele and El G couldn't even come near it. It may well be that 3000m was Komen's perfect sweet spot, but it's still a record no one has come close to ever. Scary part is the dude ran this at age 20, and quit running just 2 years later. Lord only knows what his final 3000m WR may have been had his training continued. 7:18? 7:15? Crazy to even think about...

probably one of the most unbeatable WR

Probably the only time Komen really pushed it. Imagine what the 2-mile record would have been had he continued jogging down 200 more meters.

just incredible; i'd have trouble keeping that pace for even 1 lap

This is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest runs of all time. And the commentary is nearly as good. Cram and Hutchings can't believe what they're seeing at first....thinking, stale runners at late season meets with overambitious pacemakers. But after 4 laps the tenor changes. 3:54 at 1600! Gabresilasie gave up on this after a couple of 7:25s. Even El G in 99, with a huge WR to his credit (the 4:44), missed this by miles in clocking the #2 of all time. Komen's pace defies belief.

Daniel Komen promised anyone who breaks this record a brand new MErcedes Benz from him. He dared Bekele in particular and all the citizens of the world in general. If El Guerrouj didn't bring it down, it'll take an intervention from a higher being to bring it down, not man! Also, Komen is the only human that has ever run a sub 8 minute mile (two sub four miles back to back) twice! He did it twice and his world record is around 7.58. He's an animal.

They have all tried and failed.

I'm going to be honest. It appears he ran 7.5 laps, and I also timed it at 7:20. Seems legit. I'm fairly confident in saying I believe this track is not short...so it would appear to me that he legitimately covered 3000m in 7:20. In fact, anyone that doesn't think he covered 3000m here in 7:20.67 is INSANE!! as it's quite obvious he did...

This is so much more impressive than e.g. Bolt's records. If only people understood...
