SYNOPSIS Data protection is one of the biggest and most important issues of our century. With the digitalization of every area of life, people become ever more predictable and their freedom of choice ever more limited. Every single day, each of us takes advantage of offers that involve us not only making ourselves personally identifiable but also leaving behind an abundance of information about our private lives in digital forms that can be easily processed. It is crucial, therefore, to ask questions about our self-determination in the digital age and, particularly, in the digital market economy, and to decide whether we, as society, consider that complete and uncontrolled harvesting of all personal data is appropriate. Democracy offers an insight into a hidden world of political struggle for new data protection legislation in the European Union. For two years, the film follows several key figures behind the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. We see rapporteur Jan Philipp Albrecht talking to lobbyists and civil rights activists, joining fringe gatherings and debates, participating in think tanks, talking with colleagues in the corridors of power, reporting to EU Commissioner Viviane Reding, and finally coming up with a proposal. Complex power structures come to life in a snapshot of democracy in practice.
