This awesome steaming rock formation was created originally by the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera (NZ) in the Waimangu Valley. Its first name was the rock of Gibraltar as it looked somewhat like it, in 1917 it was blown up by a hydrothermal eruption which disfigured it and thats how it got its name Cathedral Rock! Maybe in a few years it will called something different? "Pebble hill" after the next eruption!?!?!
