Terry Hershey talks about the story of the Velveteen Rabbit in which the rabbit talks with the skin horse about becoming "real." The skin horse says that it takes a long time and it's only after you become shabby, lose your hair and your joints become wobbly. The rabbit wanted to become real without all the uncomfortableness. Hershey says that the life worth living means being vulnerable, but to be vulnerable we need to allow our hair to be loved off.
