In 1966, with a grant from the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) and invitation from the government of the Philippines, NRECA International Programs began a long journey to bring electricity to rural areas of the Philippines. Starting with a feasibility study that established two pilot electric cooperatives, a national rural electrification program was initiated. Under the National Electrification Administration (NEA), the Government of the Philippines continued this program with great success. Since the first days of the program, 119 electric cooperatives have been established in the Philippines with assistance and guidance from the NRECA International Programs, making the Philippines electrification effort one of the most successful over the International Programs' 50 year history.
