Trish Skram answers questions about being a PR/Media Specialist for Mercy Health Systems in Janesville, WI
My name is Trish Skram. I work for Mercy Health Systems in Janesville, WI as a media and public relations specialist. I kind of have changed my role and now I kinda call myself a PR 2.0 specialist because my job has essentially kind of transitioned into more web technology tools and engaging journalists online and also as well as traditional. I work with the media and I am also managing a lot of the social media websites that Mercy has implemented in the past 2 years. I am a media liason so I work with reporters and editors and am kind of the pin point person for any requests that come in. I also do a lot of pitching on a regular basis. I am also a writer so I'm doing news letters, articles, press releases, PSA on a regular basis as well. I think the reason I like healthcare so much is because I grew up in a family where-my mother was a nurse and my sister is a nurse now. So I grew up with that feel for taking care of people and wanting to make a difference in people's lives. Since my passions are so strongly in Public Relations, healthcare is a great fit for that. I love it because I get to listen to great patient's stories, I get to deal with crisis communication on a different level than what most new people in the profession would deal with. I did, I actually interned right here at Mercy Health Systems in 2005 and it flourished. I think the biggest challenge I would say is "shutting off the job." Public Relations is a lifestyle, it's not a job, it's not a career, it's a lifestyle. You really have to own it, and live it and love it to make it work.
