Its the limited edition Golf GTI that celebrates Volkswagens 35 years of the worlds best, most well rounded hot hatchback. The 2.0-litre TSI power unit is de-tuned from the Golf R to produce 173kW, but you also lose the 4WD system - that means it will sprint to 100kph in 6.5-seconds. With the power boost this must surely rate as the best Golf GTI ever made, and if that is the case it must surely rank as the best hot hatch ever made? Well, that might be a little contentious considering the new, ballistic levels of hot hatch performance from the Renault Megane RS and others... Nevertheless, we take the GTI 35th Edition to a tough proving ground, Bainskloof Pass in Wellington, to make up our minds. It should at the very least, show us the way forward for the next generation, mkVII, Golf GTI.
