Participatory budgeting is a form of direct democracy that directly involves citizens in the decisions that affect their lives.
Four city councilors in New York City undertook a participatory budget project that engaged their communities in budget decisions in 2012. The process started in October with an invitation going out to everyone in the community being asked to come and bring their ideas.
