It's a little known fact that 'Shine' was originally written and recorded in 1994 by a 14-year-old Kevin Pietersen in his home town of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The original version contained a 19 minute drum/sitar duel, and Pietersen was famously booed off of the stage at a local talent show whilst attempting to perform it, playing all instruments simultaneously. Needless to say, he still won the competition because the judges enjoyed the catchy verse and chorus. The tune was forgotten for eleven years until it re-surfaced in 2005, in the form of a hit cover version by the Australian Pop Idol winner, Shannon Noll.
"This is the time. This is the day that we've been waiting for. All the world has stopped to watch you shine." ( K. P. Pietersen, 1994)
