Light wood was used quite densely as a base. Chicken wire and polypropylene bags (not polystyrene as I erroneously said) were placed over to add tensile strength and support. They will also protect the waterproof plastic which will be placed over them before putting the sand. The bags are strong, very durable and light. They need to be covered fast in order to protect them from the sun, which is one of the only things that degrades them.
