During this masterclass, the emphasis will be on gaining skills and insight in working with polyphony, with Josquin's two L'homme armé Masses serving as the musical context. The most important task of the musician in polyphony is bringing one's own musical line in harmony with that of the other musicians.
What the musician needs are a listening ear,
an open and critical mind, and a feeling for group unity. It is this continuous group dynamic that really brings polyphonic compositions to life. Every member of an ensemble is creatively involved in the development and realization of polyphonic works. The artistic 'leader' of the group brings the many ideas together into a rich artistic texture. This allows the composition to shine as it was 'authentically' intended.

Using the Missa L'homme armé as the departure point, poly-phonic vocal techniques will be developed and applied. The participants will be trained in modal tuning, rhythmic finesse and complexity, and techniques which develop the rich pyramid of polyphonic sound. Improvisation will also be an important aspect of this masterclass.
Improvisation leads to greater insight into the polyphonic compositional process and allows musicians to deal with the 'notes' in a more spontaneous and critical way.
