Seeds of Celebration
One of the first paintings I did at art college was of seeds. I tried to paint not just a picture of what seeds look like, but also the concept of growth -- the "life cycle". Since then I have worked on the boundary between figurative painting and abstraction. Representational painting uses paint -- colours, shapes, lines -- to create the illusion of something real. Abstract painting uses the same language to create feelings and ideas -- images that cannot always be interpreted literally.
Art is an act of creation. As such it must come from positive feelings. My work is a celebration of the life force that makes new leaves appear in the spring and helps people to survive, sometimes against all odds. I hope the seeds which the works generate are as varied and as numerous as the seeds which I have nurtured into paintings.
