Taking the first steps on any difficult journey requires courage and commitment – and for those who have difficulties with reading, writing, maths or technology, the stigma attached can prove daunting and discouraging. Often people who return to education say the hardest part was making the first call or taking the first step into an Adult Education Centre.
Take the first step is Ireland’s campaign to encourage adults who have difficulty with reading, writing, maths or technology to contact a Freephone support line 1800 20 20 65 to get the help they need.
The campaign will include national radio advertising, video and digital advertising on social media, posters, as well as lots of PR and media coverage.
The radio and video advertising campaign will feature four students sharing their positive stories about returning to education to improve their literacy and numeracy. They are Eamon from Kilkenny (38), Chris from Sligo (53), Gerardine from Meath (40) and Tony from Cork (59). All four students are early school leavers who struggled with literacy and numeracy difficulties throughout their life.
The campaign will be launched in Dublin on International Literacy Day on Thursday 8 September.
