I wrote this song in 1984 after reading Leopold Kohr's fantastic book about radical political decentralization called "Breakdown of Nations." I met Kohr a year later. His writings on top of my libertarian pacifism have informed much of my political activism since. (And, yes, he was born in 1909, not 2009...duh...)
LYRICS: THE BREAKDOWN OF NATIONS (c) 1984 Carol Moore
When the bombs destroy the boundaries between the nations' sovereignties and cities are reduced to smoke and ashes. When politicians' militaries can't hold together their territories and paper money's only good for burning. Survivors in their misery will curse the nations' rivalries and wonder 'bout the lessons that they're learning.
REFRAIN We're heading to the breakdown of nations. We're heading to the breakdown of law. We're heading to the breakdown of leaders. We're heading to the breakdown of all that we believe in.
But do we have to lose and die or are we gonna question why the boundaries and sovereignties are needed. When politicians speak of war and flags and creeds they're fighting for do we all have to stand and pledge alliegance? Or do we need war's misery before we curse the rivalries and open up our eyes so we are seeing.
BRIDGE There's no need to despair. The answer is clear. We must break the nations up before they break us down.
REPEAT REFRAIN AND ADD We're heading to the breakdown of nations. We're heading to the breakdown of nations. We're heading to the breakdown of nations.
