SPEAKING OF HISTORY LECTURE SERIES, 2015-2016
“The History of Our Heritage #1: The Creation of a Village”
Sunday, October 11, 2015, 2:00 p.m., Pinellas Room, Heritage Village

James Anthony Schnur, Immediate Past President,
Pinellas County Historical Society

During the 2015-2016 year, both Heritage Village and the Pinellas County Historical Society (PCHS) celebrate their fortieth anniversary. The first four “Speaking of History” programs retrace the history of the Village and the structures that moved to our site.

The first program recounts the controversial decision approximately forty years ago that moved many of the museum treasures once stored in the basement of the Pinellas County Courthouse in downtown Clearwater to the site now known as Heritage Village. Originally named Heritage Park, the assembly of the first structures along the southern part of the property served as the foundation for the many buildings and features added since then. This lecture describes the early efforts of Ralph Reed and others to collect our history, the decision to move the Pinellas County Historical Museum to Heritage Village, and the background of the first structures that arrived on site. These buildings include the Plant-Sumner House, the House of Seven Gables, the Lowe Barn, and the McMullen-Coachman Log Cabin.
