Nodle Kangbyon arr. Wallace Hornady University of Washington University Singers Conducted by Hyokyoung Byun Spring 2011
The melody of this traditional piece originates in the northwest corner of South Korea. Besides evoking imagery of the land, the willow tree and the river become symbols of disloyalty and steadfast devotion, respectively. Originally arranged for boys voices, this piece also adapts well for mixed choir.
Beside the Nodle river -- a willow tree in springtime. To the wavering branch we shall firmly fasten time, Which passes with indifference and apathy.
EHEYO! [an outcry]
Even the swaying willow tree we can't rely on. We can only trust the blue water that is going along by itself -- Self-sufficient, self-reliant.
