Even if you don't speak Russian, the expression on this fisherman's face is enough to tell you he is not having a good time.

The video shows him trapped wrist-deep in the massive, toothy jaw of a monkfish that clearly has no intention of loosening its grip.

How the fish ended up biting down on his hand is not clear, but the description posted yesterday alongside the YouTube video suggests it may have happened as the fisherman was trying to pull the fish from his net.

A user on Reddit, one of several sites where the clip has gone viral today, offers a different explanation: the fish latched itself onto the man while he was noodling, a practice common in some parts of the US whereby intrepid amateurs catch catfish with their bare hands.

This explanation seems unlikely, however, as the fisherman and his colleagues appear to be well-equipped professionals.

But for two-and-a-half minutes we watch them struggling to free the fisherman's hand, using variously a timber plank, a metal pipe and a gutting knife to finally pry the fish's mouth open.

A minute later the grimaces turn to smiles as the fisherman poses for a shot beside his vanquished tormentor.
