In October 1944, Technical Sergeant Charles Coolidge assumed control of his men (many of whom had never been under fire) and exposed himself to enemy fire in order to walk up and down the line, rallying his unit to hold its position despite withering enemy fire near Belmont-sur-Buttant, France. Coolidge was awarded the Medal of Honor on June 18, 1945.
