Meera from Khabar Lahariya, a weekly newspaper run by female journalists discusses the daily challenges for female reporters in northern India.
"As a female journalist, we have to face many challenges. We have to convince our family members as most journalists are men. There are very few female journalists. In Khabar Lahariya, all journalists are female. Family members often raise objections about how we can step outside [the home] and work alongside men. Thus, we have to first start by convincing our own family members. Many people ask - being a woman, how can you work as a journalist ? How can you deal with political issues ? How can you interview men ? How can you talk to the government officers and the politicians ? These are some of the common questions/issues that we have to deal with. The situation is worse for Dalit women; people often question how a Dalit women can work as a journalist. There is a belief that only men can work as journalists. Khabar Lahariya has shown that not only men, but even women can run a newspaper. We have been running it well for the last 14 years. You can contact Khabar Lahariya through our website (http://khabarlahariya.org/khabar-laha...). The newspaper is currently being circulated in various districts of Uttar Pradesh - Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba, Faizabad and Lucknow. You can come to any of these districts and get in touch with us."
