Williamsburg Place Lecture Series The Farley Center and The Pavilion host monthly professional workshops for area providers. These cutting edge presentations feature information on addiction, ethics, dual diagnosis, co-dependency, military and addiction, eating disorders, assessment, and process disorders. Workshops are held on the 4th Friday of each month from 9:00 am -11:00 am on the campus of Williamsburg Place.
Describe the prevalence of problematic substance use in nursing professionals. Identify four personal risk factors and four professional risk factors that moderate the risk of a nurse acquiring a substance use disorder. Identify two proactive responses to initiate if suspicions of problematic substance use surface in yourself, a loved one, or a colleague. Describe two strategies that can be initiated to decrease substance use disorders in nurses. Identify two negative impacts that shame and stigma have on nurses who have acquired a substance use disorder. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Paula Davies Scimeca is a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) who obtained her baccalaureate degree in nursing from Adelphi University and her master’s degree in psychiatric/mental health nursing from The State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Her career has spanned four decades, with the first ten years spent in medical, surgical, and critical-care nursing. With over twenty years of experience in addiction and psychiatric nursing, she is a recognized expert on the issue of substance use disorders in nurses.
Author of Unbecoming a Nurse and From Unbecoming a Nurse to Overcoming Addiction, she serves as vice president for the Foundation for Addiction Nursing (FAN) and sits on the Nurse Advisory Panel for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services.
