In today's Mac Monday video I show you how to restore from Time Machine.

Time Machine is the built in backup solution in Mac OS X and can come in handy if you ever need to find a restore a lost or deleted file. As a rule you need to open up the application or folder in which the missing file or item is associated with then open Time Machine. So if you're looking for a missing email then you would need to open Mail followed by Time Machine. You can enter Time Machine either through the dock icon or through the menu bar icon.

When you enter Time Machine you'll see an open window, which may be a Finder or application window, which will show the present state. You should be able to see other windows stacked up behind it going back in time. To the right of the screen you will see a timeline, you can click anywhere on here to go back to a specific date or time.

To go back in time and search for an item click the back arrow and it will move through the open windows until it senses a change. At that point it will stop so that you can take a look at the files present, you can quick look these files if necessary and navigate into any folders as you would normally. After locating the file simply click on it and then click Restore at the bottom right of the Time Machine window. Time Machine will restore the file into your chosen application or folder.

Time Machine can also be used to restore your entire Mac if needed and can be useful if anything happens to your Mac and you need to do a full system restore. It can also be used if you get a new Mac and want to transfer everything over to your new Mac via the Migration Assistant.
