Tony lost his son, Damien, to a heroin overdose. Here Tony describes the nature of heroin dependence and his feelings of panic and guilt upon discovering Damien's dependence. He also shares his experience of dealing with stigma while supporting Damien during his struggle.
Heroin dependence doesn't only affect the user, but can have a devastating impact on their friends and family as well. It can be exceptionally difficult for the loved ones of drug and heroin users to know what to do for the best and how to help.
Throughout Damien's battle with drug and opioid dependence, Tony and his family experienced a widespread lack of support and understanding of what families go through. They found it difficult to get information about drug and heroin dependence or advice on how they could help their son.
