Sunset Crater National Monument is a beautiful 1000 foot high dormant volcano. Erupting sometime between 1040 and 1100 Sunset Crater is the most recent in a six million year history of volcanic activity in the Flagstaff area. The Park Service no longer allows anyone to actually climb to the top of Sunset Crater but there is another crater adjacent to it (Lenox Crater) that they do allow access to. I actually did climb to the top of Sunset Crater back in 1969 and when I told the Ranger that, she was quite envious stating that they don't even let the Rangers climb Sunset anymore (not since the late 1970s)
