Jozi are the hottest hip-hop & urban pop crew in SA. Their name is derived from a shortened version of Johannesburg (aka Jo'burg/Jozi) South Africa, where they reside. With their musical talents they represent Jo'burg and Africa globally. The individuals of the crew comprise of Ishmael Morabe (aka Ish) and Leslie Mampe (aka Da L.E.S), who both add various facets to their unique sound, which they have termed Muthaland Crunk.
In 2009, JOZI release the album, Wildlife has garnered no less than 6 hit singles in South Africa and they now have 3 more hits waiting in the wings -- in September they teamed up with international superstars Brick n Lace to record a slice of pure Urban Pop heaven -- Everybody (Muthaland Is In U'r Town) and their unique version of Electric Avenue (made famous by Eddie Grant) rocked Mzansi summer in 2010/2011. In addition to that, 3rd new track Diva was selected by Nokia as a feature giveaway track for the launch of Jozi internationally via their much talked about OVI platform. They have also shot 2 superb, sure to be award winning videos for Everybody (Muthaland Is In U're Town) and Electric Avenue - check them out from the below links.
Late 2010 saw Jozi picking up the Best Hip Hop Video Award in the Sounds Of The City Awards in Nigeria and four award nominations for the 2010 Metro FM Music Awards (Best Group, Best Hip Hop, Best Video and Best Styled Group), as well as a nomination for the Artist Of Year in this year's MTV Base Awards. (see below for full list of nominations and awards received by Jozi).
In July of this 2010 they performed to over 1.5 billion people worldwide at the closing of the 2010 World Cup, adding to their ever-increasing global presence in the international music community, whilst their presence in Africa will be further enhanced when Mzansi Magic (on DSTV) flight The Making Of Jozi in December - the first in a series of documentary's focussing on SA's hottest entertainment properties.
2011 has started well for Jozi, with Let's Get This Party Jumpin', the 6th single from their Wildlife album picking them up yet another award nomination - this time for the coveted Best Record Of The Year for this year's 17th Annual SAMA awards.
2011, Ghetto Ruff together with Muthaland Productions has teamed up and collaborated with various artists across the African Continent, from the likes of 2Face (one of Nigeria's leading artists), Diversity (South Africa's own Opera group), Deejay, a young talented Namibian artist, locally Tuks who is noticeable through his vanac rapping skill, and Brick n' Lace (USA) who brought us ''Your Love Is Wicked'' just to mention a few to create a new album titled ''Moving The City'' which is not only for the Hip Hop lovers, but those who enjoy the Muthaland sound.
"Moving The City" was recorded during the course / shooting of their (JOZI) latest reality show/mockumentary called JOZI MOVING THE CITY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khHX-C... ) whereby they travelled across Africa in search of new sounds, which they then married and incorporated with their own sound. This album takes you back to Jozi's 1st album titled Muthaland Crunk, it brings back the feel of the authentic electric guitar, African drums, concertina and any other African instrument one can think of
