A playground for ticks, maggots and carcasses... The smell of rotten flesh and feces awaited us after a phone call claiming that a breeding farm had been abandoned.
Soon did the claims become a reality, a true nightmare; this was in fact an abandoned puppy mill where the dogs were left to their fate... But death is certain in the presence of a thick and heavy metal chain, and in the absence of food, water and shelter when the temperature currently soars to 40 degrees Celsius during the day.
The site was unbearable with the presence of live dogs roaming around the carcasses; in fact they owe their life to them... With no caretakers around, cannibalism was their only option, and their fellows' decaying bones were their only toys. The dogs were scared but quite welcoming, maybe it was the water they were deprived of, or the caresses they had never experienced.
Due to the flea infestation and tick invasion of every inch of their bodies, they are all severely anemic and in desperate need of medical care. While one of them could barely lift her weight, and simply fell at any attempt of standing up, another's teeth were knocked out, and all showed physical wounds endured during their life of confinement.
The whole scene left us in awe, but most importantly its presence in the heart of the city, in the heart of the residential buildings surrounding it at very close proximity. It is a well known fact that the disposal of animal carcasses can present significant environmental public health risks, and spread bacteria and infections. And while municipalities delegate their workers to shoot and poison stray dogs and cats most of whom are a result of these facilities, they do not take any action to protect people and the dogs from the dangers of such situation. They turn a blind eye to putrid flesh where kids play and hang out, in the same way a blind eye is turned to breeding farms that are allowed to open without a license or standards to make the living conditions of the animals in these farms acceptable.
It is high time to take a stand and put an end to these atrocities. Legal action will be taken against the breeder who put the lives of so many dogs and people at risk.
